A single vehicle accident occurred in a residential area of Starkville Saturday afternoon that sent one person to the hospital and caused damage to a city electrical pole.
Late Saturday afternoon, a car crashed into a power pole at the intersection of Hogan Street and North Montgomery Street. The vehicle’s driver was transported by ambulance to OCH Regional Medical Center.
Oktibbeha County Coroner Michael Hunt confirmed that the driver died as a result of factors not related to the wreck and identified the driver as 58-year-old Ernest F. Beach, of Sturgis.
The Starkville Police Department responded to the scene, as did crews from Starkville Utilities.
Starkville Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Brandon Lovelady confirmed the driver had been transported to OCH, but did not confirm the current status of the driver.
The crash caused a loud boom heard throughout the area, and some residents reported power and internet outages in the aftermath.
The vehicle came to rest on the left side of S. Montgomery, just before the intersection. Visible damage included some dents on the vehicle’s front end and a flat left front tire. The car’s air bags also deployed.
The car appeared to be carrying some large wooden planks out of its front passenger window.
