The Starkville Daily News will host a candidate forum next week for those running to fill the House of Representatives seat for District 38.
The question-and-answer event will be free to the public and held on Thursday, Oct. 5, in the Greensboro Center auditorium, with candidates taking the stage at 6 p.m. The event will be forum style and not a debate.
Each candidate will be given the chance to present their platform and allowed a two-minute response time for questions formulated by the Starkville Daily News staff.
The forum will be moderated by Starkville Daily News Editor Ryan Phillips.
“We think it’s crucial for the community to be involved in these kinds of events, and that’s why we took it upon ourselves to host a candidate forum,” Phillips said.
Candidates on the ballot include entrepreneur Narissa Bradford, Brickfire Project Executive Director Cheikh Taylor and former Ward 2 Alderman Lisa Wynn. They will run on the special election ballot as independents. The seat was vacated by longtime State Rep. Tyrone Ellis, D-Starkville, in June, when he announced his retirement after 38 years in the legislature.
“We hope that the community comes out to hear what each candidate has to say,” Phillips said. “We want to provide an open space for those running to let voters know where they stand on issues important to the district.”
