A Starkville man was arrested for aggravated assault following a Sunday morning incident that left one person in serious condition.
The Starkville Police Department charged 44-year-old Stanley L. Brownlee with aggravated assault after officers responded at about 9:30 a.m. to a report of a fight between two men involving weapons at Vowell's Marketplace on Highway 12.
The male victim was transported to OCH Regional Medical Center in Starkville before being airlifted to another hospital outside of the area.
Brownlee had his initial appearance in Starkville Municipal Court on Monday night and SPD Investigator Jonathan Headley provided additional details regarding the incident during the hearing.
Headley said patrol officers responded to the call, where witnesses said Brownlee and the victim both grabbed weapons prior the altercation. The victim wielded a metal pipe while Brownlee grabbed a metal baseball bat from his truck.
Brownlee was not injured or hit during the fight, but told investigators he picked up the metal pipe after the victim lost hold of it and struck the victim in the head "several times."
Brownlee's relationship with the victim has not been released at this time and it is unclear what spurred the fight.
SPD Public Information Officer Brandon Lovelady said no other arrests were expected in relation to the incident.
Brownlee is currently in the Oktibbeha County Jail with bond set at $50,000. His next appearance in Starkville Municipal Court is scheduled for Nov. 1.
If found guilty of aggravated assault, Brownlee could face up to 20 years in prison along with fines not to exceed $10,000.
