Unemployment up in city, county for June

Both the city of Starkville and Oktibbeha County saw unemployment rates rise in June from the previous month.

Unemployment for Oktibbeha County rose nearly two percentage points from May's totals, with 7.1 percent of the county reportedly out of work.

Starkville's unemployment went from the revised 4.5 percent unemployment reported in May to 5.6 percent for June of this year. The city's labor force was reported to be at 11,720, while 11,070 are listed as employed and roughly 650 unemployed.

Despite unemployment rising across the county from the previous month, Oktibbeha County has seen consistent improvement in June, with the unemployment rate falling every year since since 2012.

In June 2016, Oktibbeha County unemployment was listed at 7.6 percent. The improvement is drastic in comparison to 10.6 percent unemployment in the county in June 2012.

Starkville and Oktibbeha County both lagged the preliminary state seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate of 5 percent and the national rate of 4.5 percent.

For the rest of the Golden Triangle, Clay County reported 8.0 percent unemployment for June while Lowndes County unemployment was a 6.6 percent.

The preliminary state unemployment rate rose to 6.1 percent in June.

The preliminary unemployment numbers for Mississippi were roughly 65,000 of the state's labor force consisting of approximately 1,296,000.

Rankin County continued to lead the way with the state's lowest county unemployment percentage at 4.3 percent, while Jefferson County finished last with 16.7 percent.
