The total number of jobs in Mississippi increased in June, but unemployment saw a slight uptick from the previous month.
The latest data from the Mississippi Department of Employment Security reported Mississippi’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.0 percent in June.
Overall, the number of unemployed increased in June by 1,100 to 65,300, but year-over-year, the number of Mississippians without jobs fell by 10,300.
June’s unemployment in Mississippi is the second lowest rate since January 1976, when the current method of calculating state unemployment rates started.
The MDES also reported the number of non-farm jobs rose in June 2017 by 4,000 to 1,148,600. Year over year, the number of non-farm jobs in June increased by 6,100.
The unemployment rate in June 2017 is one-tenth of a percentage point higher than May of this year when the statewide unemployment rate was 4.9 percent, but is nine-tenths of a percentage point lower than June 2016, when the unemployment rate was 5.9 percent.
The labor force in Mississippi, which is made up of everyone who has a job or is looking for a job, decreased in June by 7,100 to 1,296,100, but has grown by 17,100 since June 2016.
MDES reported the number of people working across the state decreased in June by 8,200 to 1,230,800. However, employmentin Mississippi increased by 27,400 since June 2016.
