A large, mixed-use development of condominiums and boutique retail space that includes City Bagel Cafe was announced late Thursday night by project developers.

Construction is slated for this summer on the $14 million development, with the first phase scheduled to finish fall 2017.

The project called "509" will feature open layouts, private balconies and consist of three stories, with elevator access and parking. The development will include 42 upscale condo units.

Located at 509 University Drive in the Cotton District, the planned development sits less than half a mile from Mississippi State University.

Tabor Construction & Development is working with Progressive Properties, architect Briar Jones and lead engineer Saunders Ramsey on the project.

The long-time owners of City Bagel—the Tkach family—are set to retire this summer, and the local staple will continue "without interruption" through the local culinary collective, Eat Local Starkville.

Owned by restauranteur Ty Thames and his business partner Brian Kelley, the collective consists of local hotspots including: Restaurant Tyler, Bin 612 and The Guest Room.

The pair said they admired the Tkach family's work at City Bagel, but didn't consider ever acquiring the cafe.

"It's such a special place for the Starkville community, and we look forward to keeping the legacy going with the foundation of integrity that the Tkachs have put in place for the past 20 years," Kelley said in a statement.

The Tkach family hoped the establishment would live on as a local fixture.

"We are pleased that [Thames and Kelley] will continue to keep City Bagel Cafe running as it has for 20 years," the family said in a statement. "We know they will provide quality services and products as we have tried to do over the years. The Starkville community has been wonderful to us, providing friendship and at times, much needed support."

To honor the family, the two residential buildings will be known as "The Joe" and "The Mary."

Pre-sale information and more details on the development is available at citybagelcondos.com.
