Oktibbeha County Circuit Clerk Glenn Hamilton was arrested in Clay County early Friday morning on charges possession of methamphetamine, possession of Indian artifacts and trespassing, according to Clay County Justice Court records and Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott.
Scott said a 911 call came in Thursday from northern Clay County stating a truck was parked on the side of the road and someone was trespassing on the caller’s property. Officers then found Hamilton and Rufus Edward Lewis, and recovered several artifacts from a nearby Indian mound, as well as narcotics.
According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office website, Hamilton was arrested and booked into the Clay County Detention Center at 12:22 a.m. by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office. He was released at 2:46 a.m. The website listed the trespassing charge, but did not list the possession of a controlled substance charge. Lewis was booked into the Clay County jail at 11:57 p.m. Thursday evening.
Both men are out on a $10,000 bond for the methamphetamine charge and a $282 bond for the other charges. The initial court date is set for July 14 in Clay County Justice Court.
Hamilton could not immediately be reached for comment.
Hamilton, 60 years old, is a former member of the Mississippi Senate. Last November, he was elected to serve a second term as Circuit Clerk.
