The Oktibbeha County trial for an Arkansas woman accused of leaving the scene of a fatal car accident in Starkville has been delayed.
Haleigh Brooke Singleton was indicted for “leaving the scene of an accident with injuries” on Jan. 5.
The indictment states Singleton, while operating a motor vehicle, failed to stop or remain on-scene after a car accident, which resulted in the death of D’shante Nix, a 23-year-old Starkville resident.
Singleton’s bond was set to $40,000, and she met bond.
THE NIGHT OF THE INCIDENT
Nix was riding a bicycle on Old Highway 25 South near the intersection at Poor House Road when the accident occurred around 7:45 p.m. on Sept. 25, 2017.
According to the previous statements of Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Lt. Brett Watson, two vehicles were involved in the crash.
“The first vehicle was still on-scene, and the driver of that vehicle, and some folks who had stopped later, were attempting to render aid to the victim of the case,” Watson said.
Watson said investigators found Singleton’s vehicle through security camera footage from a local gas station.
The vehicle in the footage matched the vehicle witnesses described.
The footage also showed a man as one occupant of the vehicle. The man identified in the footage contacted law enforcement to provide Singleton’s whereabouts.
Singleton was identified as the driver of the vehicle and arrested on Sept. 28, 2017.
Nix was pronounced dead at OCH Regional Medical Center shortly after the incident. According to Watson, investigators believed
Nix was riding his bike in the appropriate lane of traffic.
Dominic Ellis, mother of Nix, and Aquila Rieves, cousin of Nix, were in traffic when they were informed Nix was inside the ambulance.
“I was shocked,” Rieves said.
She still remembers the night vividly. Rieves and Ellis followed the ambulance to OCH to be with Nix.
“He just loved riding bikes,” Ellis said through tears. “That’s what he loved to do.”
The Circuit Court schedule suggested Singleton’s trial would occur this court term. However, the trial will likely be delayed until the October term.
