A Starkville man is facing multiple charges after police say he kicked an officer in the face on Thursday.

Starkville Police officers arrested 44-year-old David Helms on Thursday after responding to a disturbance call at a residence on Didlake Drive.

According to court documents obtained by the Starkville Daily News through a public records request, Helms is accused of kicking the SPD officer in the face with his bare foot.

SPD Public Information Officer Brandon Lovelady said the officer was not injured during the incident.

Court documents also say Helms refused to get in the backseat of the SPD patrol car and was given commands three times to do so. This occurred on Central Avenue, where police say Helms was drunk in a public place in the presence of two or more people.

Helms had an initial appearance in Starkville Municipal Court on Friday, where bond was set at $5,862.50.

He is charged with felony simple assault on a law enforcement officer, disorderly conduct and public drunk.

If found guilty on the felony charge, Helms could face a $1,000 fine and a maximum jail sentence of five years.
