City, county unemployment rate increases in January

Oktibbeha County's unemployment rate rose to 4.5 percent and Starkville's unemployment rate rose to 3.7 percent in January, according to preliminary date from the Mississippi Department of Employment Security.

In December, Oktibbeha County's unemployment was at 4.1 percent, while Starkville's unemployment was at 3.3 percent.

In January, Oktibbeha County's labor force, which consists of everyone who has a job or is looking for a job, was reported to be 20,600, with 930 unemployed and 19,670 employed.

Starkville's labor force in January was reported to be 11,200 with 420 unemployed and 10,780 employed.

For January, the Golden Triangle's labor force was reported at 70,950, with 3,590 unemployed and 67,360 employed, with an unemployment rate of 5.1 percent.

Other Golden Triangle county unemployment rates for January include: Choctaw (5.9 percent), Clay (5.8 percent), Lowndes (4.7 percent), Noxubee (6.8 percent), Webster (5.1 percent) and Winston (5.7 percent).

Mississippi's unemployment rate rose to 4.6 percent in January from 4.5 percent in December.

Of the 1,258,800 people in Mississippi's labor force, 57,400 were reported unemployed and 1,201,400 were reported employed.

Mississippi lags just behind the national unemployment rate at 4.5 percent in January.

In January, the nation's labor force was reported at 160,037,000 with 7,189,000 unemployed and 152,848,000 employed.

Rankin and Union counties were tied with the lowest unemployment rate in the state at 3.1 percent. Jefferson reported the highest unemployment rate at 13.3 percent.
