A Starkville woman was indicted by an Oktibbeha County Grand Jury on Wednesday for second degree murder, nearly a year after her newborn baby was delivered at home and pronounced dead shortly after birth.
According to court documents, 32-year-old Latice Fisher is accused of killing her newborn child on or about April 28 of last year.
Oktibbeha County Coroner Michael Hunt confirmed to the Starkville Daily News that the baby was delivered at home, then transported to OCH Regional Medical Center in cardiac arrest, before being pronounced dead.
Hunt said the body was sent to Jackson for an autopsy and no cause of death has been released at this time.
Details have also not been released as to why Fisher was charged.
Both District Attorney Scott Colom's office and the Starkville Police Department declined to comment on the case, with SPD citing the issue as "a personnel matter."
According to city records, Fisher was hired by the Starkville Board of Aldermen as an SPD dispatcher in February 2017.
The state of Mississippi defines second degree murder as “done in the commission of an act eminently dangerous to others and evincing a depraved heart, regardless of human life, although without any premeditated design to effect the death of any particular individual.”
Fisher's court date is set for April 23.
Fisher is currently in the Oktibbeha County Jail with bond set at $100,000.
