An early morning house fire on Thursday resulted in a couple barely making it out of their home in Oktibbeha County.

Oktibbeha County Fire Services Coordinator Kirk Rosenhan told the Starkville Daily News the fire began in the attic of a house in the 700 block of Yeates Subdivision Road.

The fire was first discovered when one of the occupants got up after 3 a.m. and smelled smoke.

Adaton/Self Creek Volunteer Fire Department and Central Oktibbeha Fire Department both responded to the blaze.

Rosenhan said the ceiling collapsed in the living room, but there was no other fire damage in the home.

The couple and their dog were able to escape the fire unharmed.

“The house had smoke detectors, but as the fire was above the ceiling, the smoke detectors had not sounded,” Rosenhan said. “We urge everybody to have a smoke detector. It appears to be electrical in origin but is still under investigation.”
