A New Orleans man is behind bars after being accused of abusing a child in Oktibbeha County.
Oktibbeha County Sheriff's deputies on Tuesday arrested 38-year-old William Farris on a felony warrant issued by Oktibbeha County Justice Court for child abuse. Farris was arrested in the 100 block of Nathan Hale Drive.
Lt. Brett Watson could not provide many details relating to the incident in question, apart from a child suffered injuries, which Farris is suspected of causing.
Farris was initially taken into custody at the Winston-Choctaw County Regional Correctional Facility. He was then transported to the Oktibbeha County Jail where he was arraigned on Tuesday, Dec. 19.
Farris is currently in the Oktibbeha County Jail with bond set at $25,000.
A first offense child abuse conviction carries a minimum 10-year prison sentence in the state of Mississippi. According to Mississippi Code § 97-5-39, for any second or subsequent conviction, the person shall be sentenced to life in prison.
