A Mobile, Alabama man charged with felony embezzlement at a local business earlier this month is accused of embezzling nearly $79,000 from November 2016 to September 2017.
Former Campus Bookstore employee Brandon Peters, 33, turned himself in to the Starkville Police Department last Thursday and bonded out after bond was set at $10,000.
According to court documents provided to the Starkville Daily News via public records request, Peters is accused of embezzling $78,912.61 by purchasing returned books that were not returned on multiple instances for a total of $60,000 and taking $18.912.61 out of the register at Campus Bookstore for personal use.
A representative from Campus Bookstore said Peters is no longer employed at the business, located in the 600 block of Highway 12 East.
Peters' initial appearance in Starkville Municipal Court is scheduled for Dec. 18 at 6 p.m.
If convicted of felony embezzlement, Peters could face up to 20 years in prison and a fine not to exceed $25,000.
