Over the July 4 enforcement period, which began June 30 at 6 p.m. and lasted until July 4 at midnight, Mississippi Highway Patrol Troop G tallied up the number of enforcement totals.
Troop G reported 808 traffic citations, eight DUI arrests, four misdemeanor drug arrests, one felony arrest and 12 traffic crashes. Out of the 12 traffic crashes, one resulted in the death of 53-year-old Michael D. Watson of Amory.
The accident happened on Mississippi Highway 8 near the Westville community in Monroe County at 11:36 a.m Monday.
MHP said Watson was traveling west when his truck left the highway, went through a fence and collided with a tree.
The Monroe County Coroner pronounced Watson dead at the scene with the cause of death still undetermined. The coroner is determining whether the death was a result from injuries from the accident itself or from an underlying medical condition.
The accident is under investigation by MHP.
The enforcement totals for MHP statewide were 5,618 traffic citations, 100 DUI arrests, seven felony arrests and 183 traffic crashes. There were three fatal crashes statewide, with one in Yazoo County, one in Grenada County and one in Monroe County.
