Columbus is celebrating Independence Day on Saturday with its 6th Annual Fireworks on the Water at the John C. Stennis Lock and Dam.

The event is free and will begin at 5 p.m. It will feature live performances, food vendors, activities for children and a fireworks show over the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway.

Children's activities include bounce houses, face painting and entertainment with Mother Goose and DeeDee the Clown. Vendors will also sell glow-in-the-dark toys for children.

Visit Columbus Executive Director Nancy Carpenter said the fireworks show will be synchronized to patriotic music.

"There is no specific time for the fireworks, but they will begin at dark, most likely between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m.," Carpenter said.

The two performing artists at the event will be Swing Shift and Danika Portz and vendors will sell food ranging from barbecue to funnel cakes.

Parking will be available on both banks of the John C. Stennis Lock and Dam. Carpenter said the east bank will be exit-only after 8:45 p.m. and the traffic lights on Highway 45 will be flashing to allow traffic to clear quickly after the event.
