Mississippi motorists will soon be subject to a new law governing seat belt use.

Starting July 1, all occupants of a vehicle will be required to wear seat belts on Mississippi roads, rather than just those riding in the front seat.

“It’s still the same old seat belt law section, it’s just being amended to include all passengers,” said Mississippi Highway Patrol Public Information Officer Criss Turnipseed.

Turnipseed said the law would also make it illegal to ride in the back of a pickup truck. He also said MHP troopers often saw these issues in the field, and that the laws were designed to make traveling safer.

“All occupants of a vehicle must be restrained now, not just front seat,” Turnipseed said.

Currently, the fine for no seat belt is $25.
