The Starkville Fire Department will soon offer an opportunity for citizens to learn more about their day-to-day operations while also providing a hands-on learning experience.
SFD's first Citizen Fire Academy will be held from July 13 to August 17 and is open to Oktibbeha County and Starkville residents ages 18 and up.
SFD Chief Charles Yarbrough told the SDN the department wanted to promote better community interaction and give locals a chance to see what goes into the job.
"I think there are sometimes misconceptions about what we do and what we don't do," Yarbrough said. "We don't just put structure fires out."
Participants will be able to use tools and work in fire gear, while also learning about search and rescue, CPR, first aid and smoke detectors.
CFA participants will be certified in CPR and first aid, but all training exercises will be on a volunteer basis.
The classes will meet on six consecutive Thursday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The first night will consist of an orientation and participants will learn about each SFD station and its personnel. Additionally, participants will be taken to the 911 center to see firsthand how emergency calls work from start to finish.
"It will be hands-on if they want it and they can actually go into the burn building and put a fire out," Yarbrough said.
