Storms battered the Golden Triangle for the second time in a week on Thursday, with localized hail reported throughout the area.
Oktibbeha County Fire Services Coordinator Kirk Rosenhan told the SDN the Maben Fire Department was dispatched to Highway 82 East Thursday evening to respond to a multiple vehicle accident where inclement weather played a role.
Rosenhan said the storm dumped an inch and a half of hail on the road near Douglastown Road. The hail, along with rain, wind and fog in the area, caused at least three vehicles to leave the road.
Two passenger cars and a horse trailer were involved in accidents.
Oktibbeha County Emergency Management director Shank Phelps said hail came through on the first round of storms at about 7 p.m., while a second line of storms brought high winds and heavy rain to the area.
While traffic was impacted in the area where the heaviest hail occurred, no injuries were reported.
“It was very localized,” Rosenhan said. “You can see the piles. There was no great property damage, but just interesting there was that much localized hail.”
Phelps said the second line of storms levied more damage on Starkville, with reports of trees down at Brown Road, Harold Road and Blackjack Road.
The NOAA Storm Prediction Center (SPC) confirmed a mix of quarter and nickel size hail in Maben on Thursday.
"I've never seen anything like that before," Phelps said, referring to the heavy hail that blanketed a isolated spot in the Maben community.
The SPC also received a report of half dollar size hail in Starkville, two miles southeast of the MSU campus. Additionally, a traffic light was damaged at the intersection of South Montgomery Street and Locksley Way.
No weather-related injuries were reported in the Starkville area.
In Lowndes County, power poles were reported down near Carson Road. There were also reports of shingle damage to roofs.
