Ward 2 Alderman Lisa Wynn officially qualified on Monday to run as an Independent after the Starkville City Clerk’s office certified a petition with the necessary number of signatures.
Starkville City Clerk Lesa Hardin said Wynn reached the 50-signature threshold to qualify, bringing 60 signatures total on Monday morning.
Wynn told the SDN on Monday she opted to run as an independent to help make better use of campaign funds going toward signage and advertising.
“After exploring all our options, we decided it would probably be in the best interest of my campaign to run as an Independent as a cost-saving measure,” she said. “So they graciously gave the signatures we needed.”
Wynn looks to win her second term on the board, but will not be alone on the general election ticket on June 6.
Wynn will face competition from former Ward 2 Alderman Sandra Sistrunk, a Democrat who Wynn defeated in a close 2013 run-off. She will also look to defeat political newcomer Jesse Carver, a former Mississippi State baseball player and brother of Ward 1 Alderman Ben Carver.
“I think for my friends and family and associates, they know my heart is in the right place and what is important is I get the job done," Wynn said. "I will return those telephone calls, I’m easily accessible and I will get the job the done.”
Wynn also wouldn't say if she will declare a party affiliation if she ever decides to seek an elected position with the county.
“However, when the time is appropriate and I seek a state elected position I will declare part affiliation,” she said.
