The Starkville Fire Department, with the help of a hazmat crew, responded to a call involving a suspicious substance at Oby’s Cajun Restaurant on Academy Road Tuesday afternoon.

SFD Captain Andy Sharp told the SDN an employee at Oby’s opened a package and saw something suspicious. The Starkville Police Department was notified before dispatching additional emergency personnel.

“We secured the package, sealed it up and Starkville Police will take it to the crime lab,” he said.

Owner Danya O’Bannon said the mail package was addressed to the site on Academy Road, but had a different name not associated with the restaurant.

O'Bannon opened the package, where she found a bubble-wrapped glass container containing a white powder.

"We get little parts and all in for our equipment and we get all kinds of things, so it was in a small little package," she said. "But when I cut it open it was inside of bubble wrap, there wasn't any loose powder or anything."

She then said police would test the substance out of caution, but did not think it would be threatening.
