Albert Gore Jr. and John Young are the new leaders of the Oktibbeha County Democratic Party after being elected chair and co-chair, respectively, by the county executive committee Tuesday night.
Gore served as chair of the party for seven years before stepping down in 2012 to run for the United States Senate. Gore won the Democratic primary in Mississippi but lost to Republican Roger Wicker in the general election. Gore replaces outgoing party chair Chris Taylor, who became chairman when Gore stepped down in 2012.
Young served as District 5 Supervisor from 2008 to 2012 and is a member of the Mississippi Democratic Party Executive Committee.
“We want to work together to bring about a better community at the local, statewide and national level,” Young said. “We want to bring back people the Democratic Party has lost over the years.”
The other county Democratic Party officers elected were Secretary Patti Drapala, Treasurer Peggy Rogers and Assistant Treasurer Jim Morse.
Gore said he is looking forward to becoming more active with the Democratic Party after becoming less active to care for his sister and wife.
“I’m going to try and get the vote out and get the people that re registered to come vote,” Gore said.
The Democratic Party Executive Committee meets on the fourth Tuesday of every month at the Oktibbeha County Courthouse.
