Around 1,000 parents, kids and students made their way to the Starkville Sportsplex to get free school supplies for children from pre-kindergarten through sixth grade Saturday.
The Back to School Bash gave families a chance to prepare kids for the upcoming school year with free health screenings, wellness activities, book giveaways and games. The event started at the Emerson Family Resource Center and was moved to the Sportsplex after attendance rates kept growing, Project CARE Program Manager Elmarie Carr Brooks said.
"We've been doing an event similar to this for the last 20 years," Brooks said. "About nine years ago we started formally calling it the Back to School Bash."
Families were able to register for the event by participating in the multiple booths set up around the Travis Outlaw Center spanning topics from nutrition to healthy living habits. After families visited the booths, school supplies were handed out.
