A Columbus man is dead after a one-vehicle wreck on Highway 12 late Saturday night.
Oktibbeha County Coroner Michael Hunt identified the victim as 23-year-old Brandon Tyree Perry.
His address is listed as 6th Street South in Columbus.
The Starkville Police Department said in a press release Sunday evening that shortly before the wreck Saturday night, an officer noticed a vehicle that did not stop at a Mississippi Highway Patrol checkpoint on Highway 12 at Pat Station Road.
SPD then said the vehicle continued south on Highway 12 and the SPD officer engaged his blue lights in an attempt to make a traffic stop. However, due to the speed at which the vehicle was traveling and other safety concerns, the officer in pursuit disengaged his blue lights before reaching the Collegeview Drive exit.
The officer lost sight of the vehicle for a short period of time, but then noticed the car was off the roadway between Russell Street and Spring Street.
Hunt says the vehicle was traveling west before the wreck occurred between the two streets.
Mississippi Highway Patrol Troop G Public Information Officer Sgt. Derrick Beckom said in a press release that the 1997 blue Ford Crown Victoria was traveling west when the vehicle ran off the north side of the roadway and back across the highway, colliding with a tree on the south side of Highway 12.
Hunt said Perry was not restrained in the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:30 p.m. Saturday night.
This wreck remains under investigation by MHP.
