At last, we have a tentative identification for one of the mysterious pictures from the “Do You Know Any of These People?” scrapbook in the Starkville-Oktibbeha County Public Library's Genealogy Department archives!
Last week's picture was of a fine young lady sitting for a portrait. Charles Weatherly might know who it was.
“I think your History Mystery photo for June 12 is Ms. Mabel Gunn or Susette Fowler,” Weatherly wrote. “Both were members of the A&M Class of 1913, which was one of my favorite classes of all time here. Quite a few of that class were living and continuing to hold class reunions here when I first went to work for the MSU Alumni Association in 1962. Another Starkville lady of that time was Miss Rose Carothers and she resembled the person in your photo too. But to narrow my choices to one, I will say the lady is Miss Mabel Gunn, my friend George Gunn’s mother.”
We're glad to help Genealogy Librarian Perian Kerr finally attach a name to one of the anonymous pictures in the scrapbook. Now we've got one more, which should be easier because it appears much more recent. It looks like at least some of these seven men were in town for a conference, judging by their nametags. But those are just a little too fuzzy to read.
One clue is written on the back of the picture: “Back row – Skip Shelton, son of Mrs. Ross Shelton.”
But that's all we know. Can you identify any of these faces, and tell us for what occasion this picture was taken? If you know anything about it, let us know at editor@starkvilledailynews.com and we'll put your answer in next week's edition.
