Oktibbeha County residents may receive a courtesy call Thursday encouraging them to sign up for CodeRED, the county’s new emergency alert system.
Oktibbeha County Emergency Management Director Shank Phelps said the call will direct residents to the county’s website to sign up for CodeRED. The free service provides severe weather and other alerts via email, text and voice phone call.
Phelps said he likes CodeRED because it can pinpoint alerts to the address residents list when they sign up. If there is a severe weather warning in Sturgis, those that live on the other side of the county and are not in the storm’s path will not receive alerts.
“It’s free for the citizens and I think it’s excellent,” Phelps said.
To sign up for CodeRED, visit oktibbehacountyms.org and click on the CodeRED icon. Residents can then input an address to receive alerts for and choose how they want to receive them.
Those that have signed up for CodeRED are encouraged to save the phone numbers used by CodeRED in their phones so they know which calls are emergency alerts. CodeRED will use 800-566-9780 for weather warning alerts, 855-969-4636 for general notifications and 866-419-5000 for emergency notifications.
In addition to letting residents know how to sign up for CodeRED, Thursday’s all call will allow CodeRED to evaluate the county’s local telephone infrastructure for capacity purposes.
