The city will be recognized as one of the Mississippi Municipal League's "2016 Excellence Award Winners" at this year's conference.

Starkville was named the "2016 Overall Winner" ahead of the conference set to take place in Biloxi from June 27 to 29. Other categories include city spirit, planning and economic development, public safety and public works. The categories differentiate between populations over and under 10,000.

The city secured the award for the completion of The Mill at MSU project last fall, Mayor Parker Wiseman said. The city had originally applied for an award in the planning and economic development category, he added.

"It's a tremendous honor both for the facility and all the parties that made the development possible," Wiseman said. "It was a great community effort to see the project come into fruition. It's a very unique project. It's gratifying for the Mississippi Municipal League to recognize it with its top award this year."

The mill boasts a multi-purpose, high tech conference center, 105-room Courtyard by Marriott Hotel along with a 456-space parking garage. The hotel and parking garage sit adjacent to the three story center on Russell Street.

For more on the award, see the June 16 edition.
