The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality has lifted a general water contact advisory issued May 13 for a section of Hollis Creek in Oktibbeha County.
The advisory was issued due to the rupture of an incoming six-inch line at the plant that resulted in 2.6 million gallons of sewage being discharged into Hollis Creek from the city of Starkville’s Wastewater Treatment Plant located at 305 Sand Road to where Hollis Creek joins the Noxubee River.
Water sampling by MDEQ staff indicates levels have returned to normal.
MDEQ advises that people can now engage in water contact such as swimming or wading and can consume fish or anything else taken from these waters.
