A horse is dead after a Tuesday afternoon fire at a barn in Oktibbeha County.
Firefighters with the East Oktibbeha Volunteer Fire Department responded to a call of a structure fire near the intersection of Highway 182 West and E.J. Road shortly after 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
County Fire Services Coordinator Kirk Rosenhan told the Starkville Daily News a metal barn filled with hay was on fire and one horse died as a result of the fire.
He then said the owner made the initial call about the fire.
Rosenhan said he couldn’t be sure if the horse was in a stall or tethered, but no other animals or people were not injured in the fire, despite other horses being in the area.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Rosenhan also said the sheriff’s department will handle disposing of the horse’s body.
