On Starkville High School’s first day of classes in August 2017, the SDN interviewed senior Mary Buckner about her hopes for the year and plans for the future. On Friday, the SDN sat down with Buckner once again following her graduation from SHS.
Here is what she had to say about her senior year after its completion.
Q: What are your thoughts on graduating?
A: “I’m very excited for the next steps in life. I’m excited to see what the world has in store for me.”
Q: How has this year changed you?
A: “I didn’t think I would miss the little things in school, like ‘it’s going to be a great day in the Jacket Nation,’ like Mr. McDonnall always says, or seeing certain faces in the hallway, or seeing people I’ve never seen before, but the little things, I will miss. It’s really bittersweet. “
Q: What’s next for you?
A: “I will be going to Mississippi State University and majoring in special education. I was a part of Teacher Academy, and we went to the schools and worked with teachers in the classrooms. I really enjoyed working with the students, and I could see myself doing that for the rest of my life.”
Q: Did senior year measure up to your expectations?
A: “Not at all, in positive and negative ways. (It went) too fast.”
Q: What are you going to miss most about SHS?
A: “ The community, definitely it’s a close community with great people, teachers and staff.”
Q: What are you looking forward to the most about the future?
A: “Just new experiences and working with new people and new encounters.”
Q: Is there anything else you would like to add?
A: “Go Jackets.”
