Man accused of using counterfeit money prompts high-speed chase

Oktibbeha County Sheriff's deputies arrested a Starkville man on several charges after a high-speed chase Sunday.

According to a press release, the arrest of 25-year-old LiJames Derez Halbert was made after a complaint was filed stating Halbert was purchasing a vehicle with counterfeit money.

Deputies later spotted Halbert near the scene, which began a high-speed chase through a local subdivision. Halbert abandoned the vehicle after an accident and deputies caught him after a short foot chase on Longview Road.

No one was injured during the chase or accident.

The press release states the charges Halbert is facing include felony taking of a motor vehicle, felony malicious mischief, uttering forgery, false pretense, felony failure to stop a motor vehicle when officer signals and a host of other misdemeanor charges.

Halbert's bond has been set at $52,792.00 and currently remains in the Oktibbeha County Jail.

The investigation is still ongoing and more arrests are possible.
