The Travis Outlaw Center at the Starkville Sportsplex on Lynn Lane suffered what officials believe to be a lightning strike over the weekend, which caused some stress for the Parks and Recreation Department going into the week.
The cause of the strike likely resulted from a line of severe storms that moved through the area on Saturday causing some minor damages to trees and structures.
“We’re still researching what happened but our staff said they heard a loud boom Saturday during the storm,” said interim Parks Director Gerry Logan on Monday. “It knocked out the elevator and fried our phone control system.”
Luckily, Logan said the city’s IT Department had some spare phones so the department could operate in the short-term.
“For anyone that needs to reach the parks office, call City Hall at 662-323-2525 and ask for or dial extension 3139,” Logan said. "We can also be reached via email at info@starkvilleparks.com or private messages on Facebook and Twitter."
