A Starkville man is facing charges of attempted kidnapping after being arrested on Friday.
The Starkville Police Department arrested 45-year-old John B. Arnold, Jr. after he was accused of trying check out a student at Sudduth Elementary without the guardian's permission, according to court documents obtained by the Starkville Daily News through a public records request.
It is unclear at this time what Arnold's relationship to the child is.
SPD Public Information Officer Brandon Lovelady said Arnold was taken into custody around 8:45 p.m. on a felony warrant.
SPD says circumstances surrounding the incident are under active investigation, but investigators believe the incident to be isolated in nature.
Arnold was released from the Oktibbeha County Jail after bond was set at $100,000.
He is scheduled to have an initial appearance in Starkville Municipal Court on Monday, March 19, at 6 p.m.
If found guilty of attempted kidnapping, Arnold could face life in prison and $10,000 in potential fines, according Mississippi Code 97-3-53.
