The boil water notice issued this week for the South Montgomery Street area was lifted on Saturday after a broken water main on Wednesday caused problems for many.

City officials were allowed to lift the notice after the state health department received clean test results from water in the area.

The notice was issued for anyone in the area who lost water pressure during the broken water main event. The stretch of road impacted is between Lynn Lane and Locksley Way.

Starkville Utilities began working on Thursday to try and address some of the unevenness on the affected stretch of road.

General Manager Terry Kemp said they need to let the area settle for it to become stable due to the amount of water it experienced.

The cause of the water main break was identified as a failed tap saddle, which is where a tap is made into the main line.

The Starkville Daily News previously reported that Starkville Utilities suspects the movement of the earth and the water main going under a heavily-traveled street caused a strain or stress on the tap saddle. The gasket then failed and resulted in the rupture.
