On Tuesday, Starkville and Oktibbeha County saw frigid temperatures, snow and icy roads.
With the weather conditions, some motorists ended up in accidents on area roads. However, no fatalities or serious injuries were reported.
The SDN checked with local first responders to provide a number of calls each agency received.
STARKVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT
A Tuesday afternoon tweet from the Starkville Police Department confirmed 25 calls starting at noon Tuesday. Public information officer Brandon Lovelady said the number and frequency of calls dropped throughout the evening and night.
STARKVILLE FIRE DEPARTMENT
The Starkville Fire Department responded to five calls through the period, including some weather-related accidents.
MISSISSIPPI HIGHWAY PATROL
Mississippi Highway Patrol Troop G, which is based in Starkville and serves 10 counties, reported 46 calls for service, including accidents and stranded motorists.
OKTIBBEHA COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE
The Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office responded to six accidents, including three vehicles leaving the road. Commander Brett Watson said the responses were average for the conditions the county saw.
“Every time we have icy roads, that’s pretty common,” Watson said.
OKTIBBEHA COUNTY VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT
The Oktibbeha County Volunteer Fire Department responded to three minor accidents Tuesday, none with injuries.
“I’m delighted,” county fire services coordinator Kirk Rosenhan said. “No fires, nothing. People were really careful. Just those three wrecks. They were minor. There weren’t any injuries.”
Despite the quiet conditions, Rosenhan still encouraged citizens to exercise caution.
