Starkville and Oktibbeha County residents should expect colder weather throughout the weekend and possible freezing precipitation on Friday.

Meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson Anna Wolverton said there is a limited threat of a wintery mix of snow, sleet and possibly freezing rain on Friday morning.

"At this time, people in that area can expect up to one inch of accumulation, mainly just on grassy and elevated surfaces," Wolverton said. "Bridges and overpasses may become slick. Due to the warm weather we're experiencing (Thursday), we're not expecting much accumulation on regular roadways."

Wolverton said temperatures will fall to 37 degrees Thursday night and early Friday morning, and the high temperature on Friday will be 39 degrees and will continue to fall throughout the day.

The cold weather will continue through the weekend, Wolverton said, but no other frozen precipitation is expected.

Wolverton said temperatures will stay in the 30's during the day on Saturday and Sunday and will fall into the 20's both nights.

"With the winter precipitation expected (Friday), be careful on the roadways while driving, especially on bridges and overpasses," Wolverton said. "As far as the cold goes, people who use space heaters in their home should learn to use them properly and keep them away from anything flammable."
