The special election runoff to decide the next mayor of Ackerman is expected to see low turnout as voters take to the polls today.
Ackerman City Clerk Debbie Boley said 22 absentee ballots had been cast by the deadline Saturday, but said it was still uncertain just how many people will vote on Tuesday.
The total number of absentee ballots cast is unchanged from the special election on Dec. 19. In that election - which saw a 42 percent turnout - three affidavit ballots were also cast.
“We’re not sure, because one (candidate) lives in Ward 3 and one lives in Ward 4, so those wards will turn out,” Boley said. “It just depends on where the other people go.”
The town has one polling place for the election, located in the board room next to the Ackerman Town Hall on Main Street.
Polls will open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.
Tim Cutts came away on top in the four-candidate race on Dec. 19 with the highest number of votes (161), while Dale Reid finished second with 102 votes.
The first round of voting saw 396 of the town’s 930 registered voters make it to the polls on Dec. 19.
The winner on Tuesday will replace Dick Cain, who died in November at the age of 71 following a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Cain served three terms as the city's mayor.
