Starkville native Jaquan Owens, 18, was charged on Tuesday with statutory rape, enticement of a child to produce visual depictions of sexual misconduct, enticement of a child to meet for sexual purposes and dissemination of sexually oriented materials to persons under the age of 18.
According to court documents obtained by the Starkville Daily News via public records request, Owens is accused of having sexual intercourse with the 13-year-old victim. If convicted of statutory rape, Owens could face a minimum of 20 years in prison.
The court documents also show Owens persuaded a child to meet with him for the purpose of engaging in sexually explicit conduct as defined in Mississippi Code 97-5-31. If convicted of enticement of a child to meet for sexual purposes, Owens could face a minimum of five years in prison.
Owens was also charged with enticement of a child to produce visual depiction of sexual conduct. If convicted, Owens could face a minimum of five years in prison.
Owens is facing a charge of providing material consisting of sexually oriented pictures to a person under the age of 18. If convicted, Owens could face a minimum fine of $500 or up to a year in jail.
The incidents occurred on and around Nov. 20, according to the Starkville Police Department.
Owens is still in the Oktibbeha County Jail with bond set at $25,000. He had an initial municipal court appearance on Tuesday, Nov. 21.
