The Unity Park Advisory Committee is looking to expand the honorees featured in Unity Park, and nominations are being accepted for potential names.
Unity Park is located on D.L. Connor Drive beside Mugshots Grill & Bar and features civil rights activists who are linked to Oktibbeha County.
Beginning in 2018 the Unity Park Advisory Committee will select up to two honorees each year to be honored on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Jan. 15.
Requirements for nominees are the nominee must have:
- lived in Oktibbeha County for at least part of his or her life.
- been deceased for at least five years at the time of nomination.
- made a significant contribution to civil rights in Oktibbeha County
- advanced community and unity within Oktibbeha County
Nominations for the Jan. 15, 2018 installation will be accepted until Nov. 15.
Currently, there are plaques at the Unity Park honoring Douglas L. Connor, Medgar Evers, Fannie Lou Hamer, Martin Luther King Jr., Governor William Winter and the Mississippi State University Men's Basketball "Game of Change."
Submissions can be emailed to the committee or mailed to 108 Grand Ridge Rd. in Starkville. More information about the Unity Park and submitting nominations can be found on the park's website.
