The Oktibbeha County Board of Supervisors held a workshop to discuss its allocation of available funds for its annual budget on Tuesday.
During the meeting, the budget showed the county’s general milage value increased and the board will move half of the milage from the bridge fund to the road fund to cover costs.
The board will have another workshop meeting on Aug. 21 at 4 p.m. in order to hear the request from the road manager and discuss the remainder of the budget. The new budget year starts in October.
Board of Supervisors President Orlando Trainer said in meetings like the one it held the board won’t always agree, but it will always do what is in the best interest of the citizens.
“I think we did have a consensus to where we can submit a budget that I think people will accept,” Trainer said. “Based on where the county is right now and based on where we think the county needs to go we think that budget puts us on that road.”
The board was able to increase its fund allocation to many different organizations. Although the board could not fulfill each department’s request to its entirety, Trainer said these increases show the board notices the influence each department has on the county.
“I think we did a pretty good job of balancing some things around,” Trainer said.
During the board’s discussion, some supervisors were looking at the funds the county gives versus the city and vice versa. Trainer said the board can’t look at what the city is doing and wait for its decision because in his eyes, people of the city are people of the county.
“To me that’s detrimental,” Trainer said. “We need to work together.”
Trainer said as the county continues to grow, they will hopefully be able to adjust the mileage and be able to keep providing funds to the organizations who are requesting budget funds.
“Overall I’m satisfied that we are moving in the right direction,” Trainer said.
